Last Saturday I had the pleasure of attending my first ever Threadless.com family reunion. It’s essentially an opportunity for all the artists, fans, and employees of Threadless to migrate to Threadless HQ in Chicago hang out together. I really made my plans to attend at the last minute, but I figured that a 3 hour drive was too short a distance to pass up.

Long story short is that the family reunion was awesome. The generosity of the company and the awesomeness of all the people there was totally peerless. The reunion itself was free to sign up for, yet minutes after I walk into the atrium I have a bag of amazing swag and a plate of free lunch. There was an ice sculptor, a giant wall to doodle on, presentations by artists (and one of the website developers- big redesign coming), a dunk tank, and more absurdly neat things.

All the famous Threadless alumni and other great artists were hanging around - I at least managed to formally meet (and be socially awkward around) Biotwist, Sonmi, Randyotter, Jublin, LMNOP, Nathanwpyle, R3d-fox, invisibleelement, queenmob, and I’m sure I’m forgetting someone. That’s to say nothing of all the too-many-to-name non-artist Threadfans who were instant best friends with everyone they’ve met.

Anyway the real kicker was after dinner, when everyone was gathered in the second story of a spacious bar a few blocks from Threadless HQ. They had Adventure Time on a projection screen TV which really, how is that not awesome, and oh yeah- every attendee had their drinks comped. Outrageous! This was also when they gave out the Bestees- Threadless’s annual designer awards worth thousands of dollars. I found out that everyone nominated for a Bestee had their airfare and lodging paid for by Threadless, even the ones coming in from a different continent. It’s at this point that I am absolutely reeling at how awesome and generous a company this is. Very sadly I couldn’t stay for drinks- I had to drive back: but yeah.

Threadless and Threadless lovers. Thanks for the good time, rock on forever. And for everyone who ever has the chance to come to a future meetup, get your ass over here, I mean the free sandwiches alone will probably cover the travel expenses.

There were some technical difficulties along the way, but the styl.us circular has finally arrived. This art zine was a group project for the stylus art collective: essentially, the task was to make a piece in the shape of a circle. People really went above and beyond in the artwork they made for this thing (I’m in it too, towards the back). It’s super worth a look.

Go to Magcloud and flip through it (there’s a preview button that lets you browse the whole thing). You can also download a free hi-res pdf (very worth it) or even buy a print copy (it’s being sold at cost, I believe).
